HTML Meta Tags - Optimization

There are many flavors of html meta tags but the ones that are most important for optimization are description, and keywords. We'll look at each of those and why they're important to the search engines.

What are html meta tags? - Description and Keywords

HTML Meta tags are used in the header portion of the html coding. They pretty much look something like this:

<meta name="description" content="At JNCNET we give the total internet solution experience. Services offered include web site design, hosting and marketing.">

The trick is to use copy from the content of your web page to give your page meaning. This is what shows up in the search engines as well to the viewers. Why is this important for optimization? Because if you try real hard to optimize a page for the keyword "internet solutions" for example and you use this keyword in the description meta tag then the chances of you ranking higher are greater. However, you also need to make your description meta tag informative to the viewer browsing a particular search engine. Hint: You need to give them reason to click on your link. Never use important words in your description if they don't show up in the copy of your web page.

The keyword meta tag is hardly used anymore because of abuse in the past. Most search engines look at the title and body content of your web page. However, don't neglect it. Use keywords that are present in the body content.
